There are twelve songs on the album from the initial thirty we put down. As
I had been working away, people have asked what kind of music is on the album,
and what songs. Well, there’s a real mixture. Much of it has a real acoustic
folk pop feel to it. Maybe half the album was written in late 2004, early 2005,
and the rest is made of tracks I’ve written for a while and simply wanted to get
my own versions down. Some I’ve recorded with Emmaus (like "Take Heart") and
others like "Self Control" and "Overnight Mechanic" are much older dating back
to "Boys will be Boys" times and "Wall to Wall" in the distant past. However,
the thing that binds them all together is that they are all songs which are
deeply personal to me, and of which I’ve always longed to do "definitive"
versions. And now, we’re "fixing and mixing" the twelve remaining tracks, and
hope to be done very shortly.
As it stands we’ve had guest appearances from Fran King and Joanne Johnston (my
lovely wife) on backing vocals, guitars by Larry Hogan and Kieran Kennedy, drums
by Lance Hogan, Paul Cantwell and my brother Tíarnán Johnston, percussion by
Greg Fromholz (he also late of the Emmaus band). In the past couple of weeks we
had ladies and gentlemen of the orchestra in studio putting strings down on
"Call my Name" (Elton John eat your heart out!), "Free" and "Take Heart". Joe
Csibi directed and arranged all the string parts, and did a fab job.
