Various bands and artists I have worked with to help improve vocal quality
and control.
- Six
- Zoo
- Mankind
- Minx
- Shimoon
- Popstars 01-02
- You’re a Star 02-04 (including Mickey Harte, Simon Casey, Brian Ormonde,
Chris Doran, Final Four, Susan McFadden, Michael Leonard, George Murphy)
All these bands have come to me for various kinds of vocal coaching. In some
cases we work simply on freeing up the voices from bad vocal habits (often the
result of mimicking some hero of theirs too faithfully, and not being true
enough to their own true voice). In other cases, we work on getting emotion and
expression into what are very good technical voices, exploring some of the
deeper issues behind songs, and helping elicit a "real" response in the
listener.
Vocal coaching tends to come at a number of points in an artists career. The
early phase where the artist is just getting familiar with their voice. This
usually happens pre the recording of a first album
Next comes the recording itself. The level of excellence needed to provide a
good performance in studio, particularly when the artist is not used to a
studio-based situation, and helping them get some of the raw emotion of a live
performance into the relatively sterile environment of a sound booth.
Finally, the artist needs help translating this performance into a live setting,
where they can do it night in , night out, without destroying the voice that
created the sounds in the first place. In the case of bands, this can also mean
helping the ensemble to get good close harmonies, in tune and in time. I have
done much work helping bands get "a capela" versions of their records together.
